Mr. Chairman, distinguished delegates, I have the honour to introduce on behalf of the Secretary-General the report on strengthening the role of the United Nations in enhancing the effectiveness of the principle of periodic and genuine elections and the promotion of democratization (A/74/785). In line with General Assembly resolution 72/164 of 19 December 2017, the report discusses developments in the field of elections and provides an update on the UN’s provision of electoral assistance to Member States.

Minister Haavisto (Finland) Minister Çavuşoğlu (Turkey) Ministers, Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen   It is a great pleasure to join you today for the 10th ministerial meeting of the Group of Friends of Mediation. Over the last decade the Group has led the way in promoting the use of mediation in the peaceful settlement of disputes. Allow me to recognize the leadership role played by Finland and Turkey, as co-chairs of the Group. 

DPPA issues Quarterly Report (1 April - 30 June 2019) of the Multi-Year Appeal

DPPA is pleased to issued its Quarterly Report (01 April to 30 June) covering activities funded under the Multi-Year Appeal. During the reporting period, the Department made further progress, thanks to funding under the Multi-Year Appeal (MYA), in assisting Special political Missions (SPMs) and non-mission settings, as well as servicing the whole UN system in the areas of electoral assistance, conflict prevention, crisis response and mediation.

Mr. Chair, Distinguished delegates, I am pleased to join you today for this sixth interactive dialogue on overall policy matters pertaining to special political missions. Together with my colleague, Lisa Buttenheim [Assistant Secretary-General for Support Operations], we hope to have a rich discussion. Allow me to thank the Bureau and Secretariat of the Fourth Committee for their support and collaboration in organizing this meeting. I express my appreciation to Finland and Mexico, the co-facilitators of this agenda item, for their leadership. 

Under-Secretary-General Rosemary DiCarlo and African Union Commissioner Smail Chergui make a two-day visit to Libya

United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo and African Union Commissioner for Peace and Security Ambassador Smail Chergui conducted a joint visit to Libya from 12-13 March. They were received by Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Libya Ghassan Salamé. The joint UN-AU delegation held meetings in Tripoli with Fayez Serraj, the President of the Presidency Council, Khaled al-Mishri, the President of the High Council of State, in addition to other members of the Government of National Accord.

Last year and again in March, this forum noted the deeply worrying trends in the occupied Palestinian territory and the rapidly deteriorating humanitarian and socio-economic situation.
