The Security Council met on 17 September against the backdrop of efforts to consolidate Syria’s political transition.
The Secretary-General’s Deputy Special Envoy for Syria, Claudio Cordone, said that Syria has made “important advances” that should be “recognized and supported”, while stressing that “progress should generate momentum for further steps to address the significant challenges that remain”.
He said Syrian authorities must focus on “strengthening accountable institutions, broadening participation, protecting civic space, and advancing transitional justice.”
At the same time, he called on international partners to provide “sustained political and practical support for recovery, reconstruction, and safe, dignified, and voluntary returns”.
Mr. Cordone also noted that the UN is consolidating its presence in Damascus to better support the Syrian-led political transition and remains committed to further developing its partnership with Syria.
