The visit provided an opportunity to hear firsthand about local needs, priorities and pressing challenges facing communities in the province. Fatima reaffirmed the United Nations’ continued commitment to supporting the people of Afghanistan and addressing their needs through engagement with local communities and partners.

Cyprus

On 2 November, Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General on Cyprus María Ángela Holguín met with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman, following her meeting with Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides on 30 October. The consultations form part of ongoing UN efforts to facilitate dialogue between the two sides.

Sudan

The Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Sudan, Pekka Haavisto, concluded a two-day visit to Manama in Bahrain on 1 November 2026, where he participated in the Manama Dialogue, convened by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), and held engagements on the margins with several interlocutors, including the Foreign Minister of the Kingdom of Bahrain.

That follows his participation last week in the Tana Forum in Addis Ababa, and the annual retreat of regional Envoys to the Horn of Africa, convened by our Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa, Guang Cong, that took place in Nairobi.

Mr. Haavisto is planning to return to Sudan in the coming weeks to continue his engagement with key stakeholders, including the Sudanese authorities, on ways to de-escalate violence and strengthen the protection of civilians.
