The Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) was founded in 1971 and currently has a membership of 18 states and territories. As part of its cooperation with regional organizations, the Department of Political Affairs has been increasing its cooperation with the PIF Secretariat to address the unique challenges facing the region, including peace and security, governance, climate change, sustainable development/2030 agenda, gender equality and youth empowerment.
The Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA) participated in the 48th Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Summit, held in Apia, Samoa in September 2017. The Secretary-General was represented by the Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs, Mr. Miroslav Jenča. DPA has also supported the Secretary-General’s annual meeting with the PIF Leaders on the margins of the 73rd General Assembly in New York.
