Yamamoto highlights the importance of intra-Afghan negotiations
Tadamichi Yamamoto, Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of UNAMA, briefed the Security Council on the situation in Afghanistan on 10 September. “I cannot stress enough the importance of advancing efforts for delivering peace; concretely the start of intra-Afghan negotiations,” Mr. Yamamoto told the Council. Keita worried about mistrust among stakeholders in Guinea-Bissau
Bintou Keita, Assistant Secretary-General for Africa, briefed the Security Council on the situation in Guinea-Bissau on 10 September. “There is a general feeling of mistrust among national stakeholders surrounding the electoral process, which must be addressed before the election if we are to ensure a peaceful and consensual process, and an outcome that is accepted by all,” she said. Council extends mandate of the Vertification Mission in Colombia
The Security Council unanimously adopted resolution 2487 (2019) on 12 September, extending the mandate of the UN Verification Mission in Colombia until 25 September 2020.

USG DiCarlo pledges continued UN support for Haiti
Speaking at the opening of a photo exhibition on 15 years of peacekeeping in Haiti at UN Headquarters on 10 September, Under-Secretary-General Rosemary DiCarlo pledged continued UN support for the country following the closing of MINUJUSTH on 15 October. A new political mission, BINUH, will begin operation on 16 October. See the photos on display here
Social media campaign highlights women peacebuilders around the world
The UN Peacebuilding Fund (PBF) has started a social media campaign highlighting women peacebuilders around the world. The campaign, began on 1 September and will continue till the 21st as the UN will celebrate the International Day of Peace. The Day of Peace will be just before the high-level segment of the General Assembly in New York. PBF is using this opportunity to recognize exceptional women peacebuilders, either colleagues or partners working for or supported by the PBF, having particular impact on peace in their communities and countries. The PBF is featuring 21 women from different countries through our social media platforms. On 21 September, the PBF will highlight the group as a collective sample of agents of change which the UN employs or supports worldwide. Follow the campaign on Facebook

ASG for Peacebuilding Support visits Somalia
Oscar Fernandez-Taranco, Assistant Secretary-General for Peacebuilding Support, participated in a two-day mission to Somalia this week, together with Mahmoud Mohieldin, World Bank Group’s Senior Vice President for the 2030 Development Agenda, and Mark Lowcock, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator. They called for sustained funding to relieve suffering in Somalia. In Baidoa, home to 360,000 people who have fled slow onset drought, terrorist attacks and armed conflict, Mr. Fernandez-Taranco said that: “Conflict and marginalization perpetuate drivers of fragility and fuels displacement. A sustained humanitarian response must be combined with government-led developmental and peacebuilding approaches to promote reconciliation and to assist people to rebuild their country.” Read the full story on ReliefWeb

Agreement on ethical principles to counter hate speech in Libyan media
In an UNSMIL-organized seminar to counter hate speech, incitement, and disinformation in Libyan media, participants agreed on a set of governing principles to promote ethical journalism and activism on social media platforms. Thirty participants, including journalists, human rights and civil society activists, media academics, and social media influencers met for two days to discuss ways to limit using media and social media networks in promoting violence and hate speech. UN Envoy: Women and youth should be regarded as key partners in sustainable peace and security Special Envoy for the Great Lakes region, Huang Xia, addressed a meeting of civil society organizations and regional fora held in Nairobi on 8 September 2019. The objective of the meeting was to promote representation and participation of women and girls in decision-making bodies and processes, and to ensure their protection as well as the prevention of violence against them in the Great Lakes region. In his address, Mr. Xia reminded the participants about Security Council Resolutions 1325 and 2250 which recognize the role of women and youth as key partners for sustainable peace and security. New SRSG arrives in Guinea-Bissau
The new head of UNIOGBIS, SRSG Rosine Hadizatou Sori-Coulibaly, begun her work, meeting President José Mário Vaz on 11 September to discuss the Mission’s mandate, transition, and the upcoming Presidential elections. She also met Prime Minister Aristides Gomes, members of the Government and the diplomatic corps, and representatives of the ‘P5’ (African Union, European Union, CPLP, ECOWAS, UN). A safe and secure enviroment is a pre-requisite for Somalia’s upcoming elections in 2020/2021
The Special Representative for Somalia and Head of UNSOM, James Swan, briefed representatives of Security Council members and partners based in Addis Ababa on 10 September. Among other issues, he focused on strenghtening AU-UN collaboration on Somalia. The SRSG underlined that a safe and secure environment is a pre-requisite for Somalia’s upcoming elections.
Mr. Swan also met with Hanna Tetteh, Special Representative to the African Union and Head of UNOAU.

Participants of UN-backed TV series call for urgent ceasefire and a peaceful solution to end the war
Participants of a UNAMA-backed television programme in the western province of Herat have added their voice to calls for an end to the conflict and the continuing harm combatants inflict upon civilians across the country. Speaking during a televised programme on Chekad TV in Herat, panellists representing civil society, religious and provincial authorities echoed Afghans across the country in calling for an urgent ceasefire and a peaceful solution to end the war. They expressed dismay that the conflict is escalating and further harming civilians, including women and children. Read the full story on UNAMA’s website
