Security Council

Closed consultations on Guinea-Bissau
Rosine Sori-Coulibaly, Special Representative and Head of UNIOGBIS, briefed the Security Council, in closed consultations, on the fast-evolving political situation in Guinea-Bissau on 11 November.

Colombia

Paris Peace Forum highlights Colombian peace process
Carlos Ruiz Massieu, Special Representative and Head of the UN Verification Mission in Colombia, attended the Paris Peace Forum this week. Speaking about the Colombian peace process at the event "Upholding Humanity Even in Times of War: the Geneva Conventions at 70" on 12 November, Mr. Ruiz Massieu said that: “Together, with the international community, we will make sure that the peace process will be implemented”.

Former FARC-EP combatants participate in a coffee contest in Spain
Former guerrillas in the process of reintegration competed with the best tasters in the world in the XIV Forum Café Barista Championship held in Madrid, Spain, on 14 November. Their participation in this championship was made possible via the National Coffee Table created with the accompaniment of the UN Verification Mission in Colombia. The ex-combatants also participated in the forum "Agriculture and Peace: Coffee as an instrument of reconciliation, development and the construction of lasting peace" held at the Polytechnic University of Madrid.

El Salvador

Peacebuilding Fund partners visit El Salvador
A group of Peacebuilding Fund (PBF) partners visited El Salvador on 11 November to see first-hand the impact and work of projects the PBF is backing. Representatives of Canada, the European Union, Germany, Japan, Norway, Sweden and the United Kingdom participated in the mission and met with the Government, beneficiaries, civil society organizations, and the UN System. The PBF and implementing partners UNDP, UNHCR, IOM and WFP provide support to the internal oversight mechanisms of the police, assist with returning migrants and help in the prevention of sexual and gender-based violence.

Afghanistan

Theater group promotes the rights of children in Kandahar 
Large audiences in the southern province of Kandahar were recently treated to drama sketches and performances by a group of actors highlighting the importance of protecting the rights of children. In a series of UN-supported performances in eight districts around Kandahar province, several thousand children, teachers, community elders and women attended performances by members of the Kandahar Theater and Film Group. The troupe looked to provoke thinking around child recruitment. They also spotlighted the importance of access to education for all children, as well as building a safer environment for children.

Central Asia

Water diplomacy on the agenda in Dushanbe
In the context of the “Water, Peace and Security” agenda, the United Nations Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia (UNRCCA) organized a capacity building workshop in Dushanbe, Tajikistan on 12 November on “water diplomacy” practices related to disputes over water resources. Representatives of relevant ministries and institutions of the Central Asian countries and Afghanistan participated, along with UN agencies, partner organizations and independent experts.

Training course to counter internet propaganda
The regional training course, “Countering the use of the Internet for propaganda and recruitment purposes in Central Asia”, organized by UNRCCA and the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Center within the United Nations Office of Counter Terrorism (UNCCT- UNOCT) took place in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan on 13 and 14 November. Over two days, more than 40 participants discussed approaches and technologies to addressing challenges related to extremism and terrorism in cyberspace.

Iraq

Meeting with Women’s Advisory Group
Deputy Special Representative for Iraq Alice Walpole met with members of the Women’s Advisory Group on 14 November. This is a group of female Iraqi civil society activists and experts who regularly advise the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), on political, legal, social, cultural and human rights issues. The meeting focused on the valuable participation and contribution of Iraqi women to the national discussion arising from demands made during the ongoing public protests. Participants at the meeting emphasized the importance of using the proposed political, constitutional and electoral reform processes to advance women’s rights in the political, social and economic spheres.

African Union

High-level visit to the African Union
The Peacebuilding Commission visited Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from 10 to 13 November to continue strengthening the UN-AU strategic partnership in support of peacebuilding and sustaining peace efforts in Africa. Led by PBC Chair Ambassador Guillermo Fernández de Soto, the delegation took part in an interactive dialogue with the AU Peace and Security Council and met with the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Moussa Faki Mahamat, and the President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, H.E. Ms. Sahle-Work Zewde. Assistant Secretary-General for Peacebuilding Support Oscar Fernández-Taranco took part in the visit.

Great Lakes

Workshop on the participation and representation of women in electoral processes
The Office of the United Nations Special Envoy for the Great Lakes region and the African Union Department of Political Affairs organized a regional workshop in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on 12 and 13 November 2019 to assess women’s participation in electoral processes in the Great Lakes region and make recommendations to improve the situation. The workshop was organized with the support of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
